Hard Conversations Without Burning the Relationship

A repeatable structure for raising what's actually wrong — at home, at work, on a team — without setting fire to the relationship in the process.

Most hard conversations fail not because the content was wrong, but because the structure was. Here is the Atlas structure that works.

    Frame, before content

Open with what you want this conversation to be, not with the grievance. 'I want us to come out of this still on the same team' changes the room before you say a single hard thing.

    Describe, then interpret

Behavior first. Story second. 'You sent the email to the client before I reviewed it' is data. 'You don't trust me' is a story about that data. Lead with the data.

    Ask before you assume

'What was going on for you in that moment?' before 'Here's what you did wrong.' You will be wrong about the why more often than you expect.
