The Fight That Keeps Coming Back: A Pattern Map
If you and your partner are fighting the same fight in different costumes, the content isn't the issue. Here is the Atlas pattern map for breaking the loop.
If you and your partner have had the same fight three times — even with different topics on top — you are not arguing about the topic. You are arguing about a pattern underneath it.
The three layers
- Surface — the topic of the fight (dishes, money, the in-laws).
- Pattern — the move-and-counter-move (you withdraw, they pursue; you criticize, they defend).
- Meaning — what each of you believes the pattern says about you (I don't matter to them; I can never get it right with them).
Where Atlas intervenes
You do not solve a layer-three problem with a layer-one fix. The Atlas Model says SEE the pattern (layer two) and UNDERSTAND the meaning (layer three) before you MOVE. Most couples skip straight to the surface. The loop continues.
